I’ve had several friends recently celebrating milestone birthdays and I’ve seen mixed reactions. Some of them were very happy to be where they are in their lives and don’t care about the number. Others seemed more focused on what they didn’t have in their lives and their milestone birthday served as a reminder that they are “getting old”.

My question: Why is that a bad thing? Age is another way to measure time and experience.

I am proud to say that my grandfather was one of the many men and women who have served our country in the military. We all recognized these courageous individuals this month on the 4th of July. I was also fortunate to attend another ceremony at the end of the month.

Since many of you already know I’m a big fan of the shore, I’m sure it won’t surprise you to know that we opted to take our little man on his first trip there for Father’s Day weekend. Of course it was very different to now be traveling with a child.

It is with great pride and joy that I’m letting everyone know our son has arrived! Logan Thomas Barnshaw was born at 2:48pm on 5/15/15 at 8lbs 10oz. Mom and baby are both well and we are adjusting to this next phase in life.

Like most first-time parents, I’m completely overwhelmed by many things – How quickly he is growing and changing, how much there is to learn and do, and how much love and joy explodes in my heart every time I see him smile.

Last month I talked about being prepared and ready for the unexpected. This got me thinking about automation and how much of a role it can play in being ready for anything.

When it comes to personal things, this could be everything from setting up a family chore schedule to creating a regular carpool rotation with other families in the neighborhood who have children in the same soccer league as yours.

My wife and I are very excited as we count down the last few weeks before the birth of our first child. As I was thinking of a topic for this month’s newsletter, it occurred to me how similar having a child is to running your IT systems.

I know many of you are thinking, “Whoa, that’s a stretch!”. But it’s true.

I have to admit that I struggled with coming up with a topic for this month’s newsletter. Every time I’d try to have a creative thought, my logical brain kept coming back to the list of things I needed to do. Does that sound familiar?

Whether you’re struggling to achieve something traditionally creative like writing and the arts or simply a project which requires your full attention, the best remedy for it can be space.

Happy New Year!! It seems so odd to hear those words when it feels like we started 2015 forever ago. As with every other year I can remember, this one started with a bang -- We hit the ground running and haven’t looked back!

Everyone seems to be trying to figure out how to fit more work into the workday, increase their participation at the gym by 700%, and still manage to spend more time with their family at the end of it all.

We’re closing out 2014 and I have to say, overall, it as been a good year for me, my family, and our business. Does that mean we need to go softly into 2015? Not a chance!

This is the time of year when we always have a few customers looking to make a final IT investment for the year, where we are pushing ourselves to finish those last couple of internal projects we’ve had on the back burner for about forever, and to just get the top of the desk clean.

Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season is upon us. I remind myself to be sure to not overdo it this year, to only go to as many gatherings as will allow us to keep sane, and to do our best to keep a low-stress, even keel approach to the next several weeks.
