I saw a bunch of kids riding bikes and skateboards down the hill of our office driveway the other day and my first thought was, “That’s not safe!” I was worried about them running into cars or getting hurt.

At some point in life, I’d gone from thinking what a great idea something like that would be, to approaching it from a more practical and responsible place.

My wife and I are getting ready to head down to Wildwood, NJ to join some of my family for a few days of shore fun. One of the things I’m looking forward to most is some fantastic pizza!

As I was salivating while pondering this idea, I remembered sharing this tradition with my wife when we first started dating.

My family and I have been going through a challenging time this past month, due to the passing of my wife’s mom. When faced with difficult situations, I take comfort in finding some sense of order or predictability in them.

As I’ve been watching us go through this type of sadness and grief that is unique to losing such an important person in our lives, I’ve also noticed the structural adjustments in the family, which aren’t so unique.

My wife and I just returned from a quick trip out of town and it reminded me how much I like to visit small towns that are different from our home. I enjoy getting up into the mountains and seeing life happen in a different way.

It’s neat to see what another area has to offer in terms of their history, recreation, and people.

It’s no surprise to see this winter living up to its nickname as the “cold and flu season”. It has quickly taken hold since the holidays and it seems as though many people are either currently sick, trying to fight it off, or recovering from it.

The holidays are fast approaching and time seems to be passing too quickly for many of us. It’s easy to get caught up in the momentum and feel a loss of control and increased stress.

What I try to keep in mind is that these things -- additional holiday commitments, other people’s expectations, and society’s pressures -- are not going to change.

I just returned from our annual IT conference in Florida and I believe it has been my most impactful conference yet. Of course I am always grateful for the warmer weather but it’s the people I appreciated the most.

It was pretty neat to see some of my colleagues (who have become friends over the years) asked to present some of the training materials as experts in their field.
