Erik’s Editorial Corner

erik_barnshawToday I’m working on a plan but it’s not working out the way I expected it would. Yes, these things happen and they happen quite often for many of us. The bigger question is now what?

Not only does my answer depend on what is not working out -- More importantly, why isn’t it working? Let’s assume you prepared for the event and had a fair expectation of what would happen based on some level of past experience. Now you have to look at how important it is for everything to go that particular way.

I’ve found that I prefer to have things go exactly as I expect and plan for them when it comes to many things in my personal life. But that’s happening less and less as I’ve gotten older and my family has expanded. What I’ve found to be more important is the outcome. So what if the child’s outfit doesn’t match and we’re going to be an hour late to Grandma’s house? He’s wearing season-appropriate clothing and we’re still going to get there an hour before dinner is served.

When it comes to my business, I try to keep the same mindset. The biggest difference is that in our industry, much of the outcome is truly based on the execution of the project. That means that if things aren’t going according to plan, you’ll need to find another way to do it. In those instances, I try to find the answers by looking to past experiences, reaching out to others, and sometimes getting pretty creative.

I built my business on things being right and that’s important to me. Sometimes you need to keep looking until you find the solution and sometimes you just let it go and appreciate the beauty of an outfit consisting of plaids, stripes, and puppies.

Thanks for your business and make it a great day!

Warm Regards,
