Erik’s Editorial Corner

erik_barnshawIt’s no surprise to see this winter living up to its nickname as the “cold and flu season”. It has quickly taken hold since the holidays and it seems as though many people are either currently sick, trying to fight it off, or recovering from it. So how do we avoid what’s all around us?

Yes -- Wash your hands, don’t share drinks or utensils, etc. All of these tips are still good, but what else can we do? I’ve found the best thing for me is to keep a healthy immune system that’s ready to fight if I come in contact with an illness. If I exercise regularly, eat well, and keep my stress level in check, I know that will be my best shot at staying healthy throughout the season.

As an employer, I encourage you to take these things into consideration with your employees as well. I know most of us aren’t large companies that can offer something like an onsite gym facility, but we can still provide our employees with good health and dental coverage (that includes preventative care), avoid bringing in unhealthy foods like chips, cakes, and candy on a regular basis, and remind them to take their vacation time for some relaxation away from work.

I’m not saying this is easy, but it is worth it! By encouraging a healthy environment for yourself and your employees, you’re laying the groundwork to lower the severity and impact of illnesses this season.

Thanks for your business and make it a great day!

Warm Regards,
